CHAPTER ELEVEN
When we got back to our room and whipped out the laptop, I jumped on first, to look for directions for the day from Jernick. Again, I had two messages, one from Theresa, and one from Jernick, marked important. Of course, I went straight for Theresaâs.
âMy protective detail is made up of a couple of pretty cool guys. Weâre in this executive suite sort of thing at a private apartment building. Wish I could tell you where. I also wish I could experience some of where I am. Looking back, if somebody asks me if Iâve ever been here, Iâll honestly have to answer ânot really'. I have a bedroom and they have a bedroom. One of them is in the main lounge area at all times. There're two couches in there and a desk where I work. I work a lot and watch a lot of movies. Thank goodness for Netflix and aliases. Iâm trying to be strong for you because I know you're strong doing what youâre doing. I did get a short briefing yesterday, although no locations or specifics. Baby, youâre brilliant. How could I ever have hoped to have such a wonderful fiancée?â She went on for practically three pages, saying so much, without ever being able to say anything at all. I was the one that was lucky, not her. I made up my mind that when we were all home, Iâd marry her within a week.
Then I opened the email from Jernick. âPassengers identified, travel arrangements made, destinations will be reached within seventy-two hours. Patience.â
âTheyâve got the Cubans that are locked up all identified and have gotten them new locations out of state. Now itâs going to be about a three day total wait for the Department of Justice to get them transferred to prisons out of state for safety. Then theyâll give up the information they have on the Columbians.â Just as I was getting ready to close the email, the laptop beeped at me. There was a new email. It was from Jernick. âXavier is a cock-sucker,â was all it said. I had to laugh. I waved my hand at Liz to get her to come look at the last email. She laughed.
âYup. Something to look back on down the line and laugh with the family and kids,â she said.
I handed the machine off to her and she read what must have been volumes of writing from Keven. I lay back on my bunk, thinking of what we should do today. More time back on the firing range. I decided to try something. I stood up quickly and pointed at the doorway, then from a crouching position I practically shouted âDraw your weapon!â
Liz dropped the laptop on the mattress, almost letting it hit the floor, and quickly drew her Beretta, pointing it toward the door. Not the cleanest execution, for a beginner, but Iâd take her on as a partner any day. âThat was amazing! You rock, chick!â
âWow. I canât believe I just did that.
